Content note: this episode discusses childhood sexual abuse and human trafficking. If you need support, resources are listed at the end of this post.

This is the most-listened-to episode of Mess to Mission, and it's easy to hear why. Linds sits down with Ally Foley, a teen pageant titleholder who survived childhood sexual abuse and turned her story into a platform to help other kids. She has since founded her own nonprofit, Breaking Free with Ally. They recorded it on a big day: the groundbreaking for Redeeming Hope, a home in Madison County, Kentucky, for girls who have survived human trafficking.

In this episode

Ally talks honestly about keeping a painful secret for years, what finally gave her the courage to tell her mom, and how pageants gave her a way to speak up for kids like her. Linds shares the vision behind Redeeming Hope, why the cause is so personal to both of them, and the warning signs everyday people can watch for in their own communities.

Key takeaways

  • Your mess can become your mission. Ally uses the phrase that gave this podcast its name: the hardest part of her story is now the thing she uses to help others.

  • Telling one safe person can change everything. Ally's biggest advice for anyone carrying a secret: find one trusted person and tell them.

  • Community is the most valuable resource. Ally's mom, her grandparents, her pageant coach, her gym family and pageant families all showed up for her, down to chipping in for her nationals dress.

  • Faith as a safe space. Ally describes talking to God "like he's a friend" on the nights she can't sleep.

  • Your eyes save lives. Awareness is something everyone can offer, even without a title or a platform.

Warning signs to watch for

At the groundbreaking, the human trafficking task force shared signs that a child could be at risk:

  • More than one cell phone

  • Expensive items like laptops, headphones or designer bags they couldn't otherwise afford, especially when basic needs aren't being met

  • Missing a lot of school

  • Sudden or unusual changes in behavior

Abuse and trafficking don't have a "look." As Ally puts it, you can't tell from the outside what happens behind closed doors, and that's why awareness matters.

Where Ally is now: Breaking Free with Ally

Since we recorded this episode, Ally has started her own nonprofit, Breaking Free with Ally, to bring light to childhood sexual abuse and human trafficking. Through school presentations, educational brochures, the Courage to Speak Pledge and two friendly bears named Brooke and Brodie, she teaches kids and families how to recognize grooming and speak up. Kentucky lawmakers even named January 6 "Breaking Free with Ally Day."
